The conference “Italian Conservatism: Europe, Identity, Freedom” organised by The European Conservative, Fondazione Tatarella and Nazione Futura was held in Rome on 30 September 2022. The event aimed to analyse the various challenges facing Europe through presentations on national identity, freedom and sovereignty and the nation-state.
The president of Nazione Futura, Francesco Giubilei, stressed the importance of holding this event and said: “We believe that international collaboration is essential to promote shared ideas and values, such as Christian identity, the classical tradition, the defence of the family, a Europe of nations or the love of freedom. In this sense, the editor-in-chief of The European Conservative, Alvino-Mario Fantini stressed that the aim of this meeting “is to encourage the debate of ideas and the implementation of concrete plans by conservative leaders from all over Europe”.
The director of CEFAS, Elio Gallego, took part in this event, he discussed on the importance of the nation-state in the conservative movement, and stated that this movement “should claim the necessary sovereignty of its own law, the validity and supremacy of its own law against all foreign interference”. In this sense, he concluded that “the peoples of Europe have a vital and urgent need to refer to their historical origin as a present inspiring and shaping their respective political lives”.
The three-day event was also attended by prominent thinkers, writers, intellectuals and political leaders such as the Spanish MEP for VOX, Jorge Buxadé, the Hungarian MEP for Fidesz, Balázs Hidveghi, the former speechwriter and advisor to Thatcher and current president of the Danube Institute in Budapest, John O’Sullivan, and the international director of the Acton Institute, Alejandro Chafuen, among others.
