The executive director of CEU-CEFAS, Fernando Nistal, and the director of the CEU Observatory of Victims of Terrorism, Maria San Gil, presented the report “The Basque exodus as a result of ideological persecution” in the European Parliament. An analysis that shows the consequences of ETA terrorism and excluding nationalism that caused the exodus of 180,000 Spaniards from the Basque Country.
In the presentation they were accompanied by the europarliamentarians, Hermann Tertsch and Jorge Buxadé, from VOX, and Javier Zarzalejo, from the Popular Party. The event began with the intervention of Mr. Tertsch, who has highlighted that separatism in the Basque Country has left wounds and fractures throughout Spanish society and has emphasized the importance of preserving the memory of the victims.
Mrs. María San Gil highlighted the strategy of “socialization of terror” that ETA carried out against Spanish society, a tactic by which it spread fear in Spanish society by extending its attacks and murders to the civilian population. In this sense, Mr. Buxadé defended the memory of the victims, denouncing that right now they are being betrayed with the pacts that the executive has with former members of ETA.
The executive director of CEU-CEFAS, Fernando Nistal, highlighted the fundamental role of all Spaniards to serve the truth: “We are here to defend freedom and show an uncomfortable truth”.
The presentation of the report coincided with the 29th anniversary of the murder of Gregorio Ordóñez by ETA. All the speakers agreed on the need to explain to the new generations, the truth of ETA and avoid that the memory of their victims be forgotten.
