On 25 January 2023, the Head of International Relations of CEFAS, Jorge Soley, took part in the International Conference on the Future of Publishing, organised by the Mathias Corvinus Collegium in Budapest. The event was attended by numerous speakers from Hungary, Poland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Spain, the United States, France and Romania.
The Head of International Relations participated in the panel, moderated by Rodrigo Ballester, on the impact of European regulations on the media. Soley pointed out that measures aimed at protecting copyright are necessary and positive. On the other hand, he warned that many of the issues to be regulated are matters of state competence and recalled the need to respect the principle of subsidiarity.
During his speech, he expressed his scepticism regarding the creation of a large body responsible for monitoring the media throughout Europe; based on the Spanish experience, the risks of it being used to exert pressure on media that are not in line with the positions of those in power at any given time are very high. He also pointed out, echoing the position of the Spanish Media Association, that any restriction on the ability of editors to establish their own well-defined editorial line would be a violation of press freedom and freedom of entrepreneurship.
