On 18 and 19 November 2022, the head of the International Area for America, Eduardo Puig de la Bellacasa, attended the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Mexico. The aim of the meeting was to reaffirm the need to defend freedom, democracy, the rule of law, the defence of life and the fight against the culture of cancellation.
The meeting, held for the first time in a Latin American country, was attended by dozens of representative figures of international conservatism such as the former candidate for the presidency of Chile, José Antonio Kast, the president of VOX, Santiago Abascal, the deputy of Brazil and son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, Eduardo Bolsonaro, the former president of Poland, Lech Walesa and the Republican senator of the United States, Ted Cruz, among others.
The president of the Viva México Movement and CPAC Mexico, Eduardo Verástegui, referred to the Mexican president during his speech and affirmed that “the authoritarian socialism of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is doing everything possible to undermine democracy and the economy“.
For his part, the former candidate for the presidency of Chile, José Antonio Kast, sent a video in which he encouraged those present to defend “our ideas without complexes”. “The left and the enemies of freedom have reached governments and are carrying out an agenda that seeks to destroy the foundations of coexistence”, and Kast proposed using “common sense” in the face of the progressive left.
The former president of the United States, Donald Trump, also made his presence felt in a video in which he stressed the importance for conservatives of coming together and defending God, the family and the homeland. This idea was also supported by the president of Vox, Santiago Abascal, who encouraged the attendees to work and establish joint strategies against those proposed by the socialists and communists.
