On October 5th and 6th, the Secretary General of CEU-CEFAS Institute of American Studies, Eduardo Puig de la Bellacasa, attended the Carvalho Dialogue together with the CEU-CEFAS collaborator in Latin America, Gustavo Nakamura and the students of the Expert Degree in Leadership and Civic Engagement, Paula Otero and Jorge Jiménez-Alfaro who are doing a research program at The Heritage Foundation.
The congress was held at Florida International University and addressed issues such as security on the borders of the Americas, the threat of China, Russia, Iran and the need to form critical thinking in the Americas in order to foster freedom, prosperity and security.
Other discussions covered topics like political culture, constitutional reform, the erosion of the separation of powers and the threat to traditional values in the political agenda. Finally, the meeting ended with the conference “Economic freedom and prosperity in the Americas”.
The conference organized by the FIU Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom, The Heritage Foundation and Texas Public Policy Foundation, was opened by Senior Counselor to the President and E.W. Richardson Fellow at The Heritage Foundation, James Jay Carafano. Other speakers such as Alex Chafuen from the Acton Institute; Humberto López Vega from Fundación Patria Unida por un México Valiente; Andrés Martínez-Fernández, Roger Severino, Mike González and Anthony Kim from The Heritage Foundation; Joseph Humire from the Center for Secure Free Society; and Javier Fernández-Lasquetty, Vice President of Fundación Internacional para la Libertad.
